Homemade Carpet Freshener

Red vacuum cleanerIf you love using carpet freshener on your carpets when you vacuum, you’re going to love this carpet freshener recipe. When I first decided to test this out, I wasn’t quite sure how it would turn out, but I gotta admit, I absolutely love this. Aside from freshening the carpets, my brain is telling me that it may also help to control ants and other crawling insects as this recipe calls for bay leaves, cinnamon, and borax. All of which are natural ingredients to help control those pesky, crawling critters.

What You’ll Need:

2 cups baking soda

1 cup borax

6 whole dried bay leaves

2 cinnamon sticks

1 tbs. whole cloves

Mix It Up:

Step 1 – Measure and pour baking soda into a bowl.

Step 2 – Measure and pour borax into bowl with baking soda.

Step 3 – Drop in bay leaves, cinnamon sticks, and whole cloves. Toss.

Step 4 – Add 1 cup of mixture into a blender or food processor and blend well. Continue this procedure until entire mix has been blended.

Step 5 – Pour into a glass jar or plastic container with a lid or a plastic zip lock bag.

To use, sprinkle on carpets and let sit for at least 15 minutes. I actually allow mine to sit overnight and then vacuum as normal.

For my container, I had my hubby poke holes into the lid of one of my recycled, glass spaghetti jars. Another method I used was to pour the carpet freshener into a plastic Ziploc bag. When I was ready to use it, I grabbed a small tea strainer to use as my sprinkler to sprinkle the carpet freshener over the carpets. You may find that you have some bits that are too large to fit through the holes. Guess what? You can just toss them onto the carpet. You’re going to vacuum it up anyway, right?

I hope you enjoy this homemade carpet freshener recipe. If you try this or any of my recipes, please let me know how it worked for you. Also, I’m always looking for new recipes, so if you have any you’d like to share, please feel free to do so.
